Assumptions

  • 2026 federal, state and New York City tax rules; standard deduction; no other income.
  • Total value = take-home pay + money going into your 401(k) (yours and the employer match you'd receive). Health premiums are treated as a cost.
  • Doesn't value stock grants, PTO, insurance quality, commute costs or cost of living — weigh those separately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I compare two job offers?+

Compare what each offer puts in your pocket and your retirement account after taxes — not the headline salary. Include the bonus, state and city income tax, your health premiums, your 401(k) contributions and the employer match you'd actually receive. Then weigh what the calculator can't: equity, PTO, commute and cost of living.

Is a higher salary in California better than a lower one in Texas?+

Not always. California's income tax can take several thousand dollars more a year than Texas (which has none), and housing costs usually differ even more. Enter both offers above to see the after-tax difference.

How much is an employer 401(k) match worth?+

It's part of your pay: a 4% match on $100,000 is $4,000 a year going into your account, tax-deferred. You only get it if you contribute at least the matched percentage.

How are bonuses taxed?+

Bonuses are ordinary income. Employers usually withhold federal tax at a flat 22% on them (37% above $1 million), so the bonus check can look smaller, but your actual 2026 tax is the same as if it were salary.
