Frequently asked questions

How is inflation calculated?+

With the Consumer Price Index: value today = amount × (CPI now ÷ CPI then). We use CPI-U, the Bureau of Labor Statistics index for all urban consumers, which is the standard measure of US inflation.

What is $100 from 2000 worth today?+

About $195.67 in September 2026 dollars — prices are up 95.7% since 2000, about 2.59% a year.

Why is there no October 2025 figure?+

BLS didn't collect CPI data for October 2025 during the federal government shutdown, so that month was never published. Our 2025 annual average uses the other 11 months.

Is my personal inflation the same as CPI?+

Not exactly. CPI tracks an average basket of goods and services; if you spend more on rent, insurance or childcare, your personal inflation may be higher.
