Assumptions
- 2026 federal tax rules and state rates as of January 1, 2026. Federal withholding is shown as your full-year tax spread evenly — what a standard W-4 aims for.
- Standard deduction; no other income. Head of household and married-separate use the single state schedule.
- Local/city income taxes aren't included unless you choose one (e.g. New York City).
- Includes CA SDI payroll tax.
- Section 125 benefits lower federal, FICA and state taxable wages; 401(k) lowers federal and state but not FICA.
Frequently asked questions
How is take-home pay calculated?+
Gross pay minus federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to $184,500), Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% above $200,000), state income tax, and pre-tax deductions like 401(k) contributions and health insurance premiums.
Which states have no income tax?+
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming don't tax wages. Washington taxes only certain capital gains.
How much is $75,000 a year after taxes?+
For a single filer with the standard deduction it ranges from about $61,593 a year in Alaska to about $55,410 in Oregon, depending on state income tax.
Why is my paycheck different from this estimate?+
Your W-4 choices, local taxes, state disability or paid-leave programs, benefits and bonuses (often withheld at a flat 22%) all change actual withholding. Over a full year, your total tax should land close to this estimate.
Does a 401(k) lower my taxes?+
Traditional 401(k) contributions lower federal and (in most states) state income tax, but not Social Security or Medicare. Pre-tax health premiums, HSA and FSA contributions through payroll lower all three.
