Frequently asked questions
Which states have no income tax?+
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Wyoming don't tax wages; Washington taxes only certain capital gains.
Do no-income-tax states have higher property taxes?+
Often. Texas, for example, has one of the highest effective property tax rates in the country, so a homeowner can give back part of the income-tax savings. The calculator compares both on the same home.
When do I start paying the new state's tax?+
From the day you become a resident. In the year you move you usually file part-year returns in both states, each taxing the income earned while you lived there.
What else should I compare?+
Housing costs, insurance (especially home insurance in coastal states), wages for your job, sales tax and everyday prices usually matter more than income tax.
